American Symbols

We just finished our unit on American symbols. It was a lot of fun. After learning about the symbols we randomly picked symbols and worked in groups of 3. We needed to create a poster about our symbol and write 3 facts we researched about it. Then each group presented the information to our class and Mrs. Golesworthy's class, and we all voted on our personal favorite symbol. Please enjoy the photos below:

Lauren, Adam and Cole presented the Liberty Bell

Alex, Madeline, and Marcus presented the American Flag

Brynja, Lidia, and Madie presented the Statue of Liberty

David, Joey, and Ryan presented The White House

Amber, Chester, and Isabella presented the Bald Eagle

                                               And the favorites were.........

Objective: To learn about the national symbols that are unique to our country and that a symbol is something that stands for, or represents, something else.

Free Verse Poetry

We have been learning about different types of poems and our class really enjoyed writing "Free Verse" poems. Typically they don't rhyme or have a pattern, but often tell a story. We had a lot of fun! Here are a couple of samples for you to enjoy!

Hope you enjoy this website!

RL.1.10 Common Core Standard

Reading: Literature
Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity

10. With prompting and support, read prose and poetry of appropriate complexity for grade 1.
Corresponding College and Career Readiness (CCR) Anchor Standard

10. Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
Note on range and content of student reading

To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts. Through extensive reading of stories, dramas, poems, and myths from diverse cultures and different time periods, students gain literary and cultural knowledge as well as familiarity with various text structures and elements. By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students build a foundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the background to be better readers in all content areas. Students can only gain this foundation when the curriculum is intentionally and coherently structured to develop rich content knowledge within and across grades. Students also acquire the habits of reading independently and closely, which are essential to their future success.
