Race To 40 Game!

We started learning about addition with regrouping!!

We played a game called Race to 40!

1. We used tens and ones blocks
2. Then we rolled the number cube
3. We put the number of ones on our place value charts
4. Then our partner had a turn to roll and take ones
5. On our next turn, we rolled the number cube and added the ones
6. When we got 10 or more ones we exchanged ten ones for one ten
( That's call regrouping when you change 10 ones for 1 ten)
The first player to reach 40 (4 tens) won the game!
It was fun......ask us about it.

1.NBT.C.4
Number & Operations in Base Ten Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.4. Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.

Addition without regrouping

I'll leave you with this joke:

IXL

We have computer lab on Friday afternoons. It is a great time for us to use some wonderful programs that we have available at Cole School. Friday we all practiced math using IXL. The boys and girls needed to work on money, time, and place value. The last ten minutes they got to do free explore on IXL.
Remember, you can use IXL from home as well. If you see that your child needs additional practice in any math skill, IXL is a great way to get in that extra practice!
See us in action!

Dr. Seuss collaborative work

We have had a fun time learning about Dr. Seuss through our Dr. Seuss week and our Scholastic news. Also, we are always working on our skills to work collaboratively. So our lesson was to work with our partner and create a new Dr. Seuss character and give him a name. Below are our creations! Enjoy!

Griffin and Trip created "Two Headed Rainbow Bird"

Aaliyah and Bella created "Lovy Movie"

Matthew and Connor create "Mene Wene"

Megan and Rose created "Scribble Monster"

Logan and Anthony created "Elfish"

Lilly and Stella created "Babby Boss"

Massimo and Blake created "King Hepton"

Dylan and Marcus created "Yop"

Madison and Lindsay created "Moocolceodelo"

What are the benefits of students learning to work collaboratively?
Q: What did you learn in school today? A: Not enough, I have to go back tomorrow!
