Winter Audubon Fun!

We had a great time today with our winter Audubon experience. We started out in a big group and learned about adaptions while turning Chester from Mrs. Puglisi's class into a duck!

Then we got into small groups and rotated through 3 different stations.
We learned about birds, and about how what they eat is determined by their beaks. We used different "beaks" (tweezers, tongs, magnet wands, strainers....) and picked up our food (off the tarp) and put it into our buckets. WOW, seagulls can get anything!

And we got to explore a bird skull and bones.

In another station we got to investigate leaves and match up the pictures with the winter plant life.

The 3rd station that we rotated through was the insect group. First we got to play an insect bingo game that taught us how to identify the different insects.

We also worked together creating life cycle puzzles
And finally we got to investigate different classifications of insects.

Then of course we did our journals!

Learning is great fun! Thank you Audubon!

How Birds Survive The Winter

There is a part in this video about countercurrent exchange which is a bit confusing. However, I think the rest of the video is informative and the birds are very interesting to watch. Enjoy!

100th Day Info!

The 100th day of school will be celebrated on Monday, February 8th. For 100’s day I am asking each child to put together a display of 100 items. You may simply want to put 100 items into a baggie or you may want to make a display of 100 items on a poster board or perhaps you want to build something with 100 "somethings". The only thing I ask is that it fit on the top of your child’s desk, as that is where it will be displayed. In addition to the display, I will require that your child write at least 4 sentences about the project. What he writes is entirely up to him. Lastly it must come to school on Friday, February 5th.
We will have an OPEN HOUSE on February 8th to view our 100-day projects and anything else your child would like to show you. Your child will host the Open House, so be sure to bring him with you. The Open House will be from 8:10-8:40am.  Enjoy these examples (2015 projects)!
