Solving word problems using bar models

We have been working hard on Bar Modeling. This concept has been one of the more difficult ones for us in second grade. Using bar models can help us to understand whether we need to subtract or add. If we use the visual representation of a bar model, we can determine if we are looking for a part or a whole. We know that if we have two parts and need to find the whole, we must add. However, if we have a whole and one part and need to find the other part then we need to subtract. Also, we have been working collaboratively and this takes practice. Please look below to see us in action!

2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1,000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

I'll leave you with this joke:
Q: Teacher: Now class, whatever I ask, I want you to all answer at once. How much is six plus 4?
A: Class: At once!
