Matter fun with the Discovery Museum

We had a lot of fun experimenting with different matter Thursday. We saw experiments with melting, evaporating, freezing and condensing. We saw dry ice in action and learned that it is a carbon dioxide gas which has been cooled and frozen (-20 degrees). We also saw liquid nitrogen in action and learned that it condenses into a liquid at -150 degrees. These are the things we saw freeze:
ping pong ball
flowers
latex free bands
banana
Look below at our pictures and ask us to explain what is happening!
Also, if you would like to take us to the Discovery Museum go to www.discoverymuseum.org
and see what they have to offer (our presenter mentioned something about free tickets).

PS1. Matter and Its Interactions
2-PS1-1. Describe and classify different kinds of materials by observable properties of color, flexibility, hardness, texture, and absorbency.
2-PS1-2. Test different materials and analyze the data obtained to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.*
Clarification Statements:
• Examples of properties could include, color, flexibility, hardness, texture, and absorbency.
• Data should focus on qualitative and relative observations.
Fun with Liquid Nitrogen      We did some of these experiments during our presentation!
Dry Ice Fun

I'll leave you with this joke:
Q: What do you call fifty penguins in the Arctic?
A: Lost! REALLY lost! (Penguins live in Antarctica.)
