Heat, Light, Sun unit

We predicted whether our shadow would change from 9:00-12:00-3:00.

We learned that the shadow moves because the sun is in a different spot in the sky.

We learned about refraction - which is the bending of light as it moves from the air to the water.
We learned about light sources like the sun, stars, flashlights, and candles.

We learned that a prism can bend light and show the different colors that make up white light.

And we recorded what we saw!

We researched about the sun, shadows, heat, and light.

Then we recorded our learning.

We all found different interesting facts.

We got to experiment with shadows.
That was fun!

We saw how things look bigger the closer they are to the light source.
We used a comb to prove it!

We made our own kaleidoscopes with mirrors.
That was amazing!

We learned that light travels in a straight line.

And we proved it!

Our new goldfish

As you may know, I was able to purchase a new aquarium for our classroom with the generous gift cards that you all gave to me for Christmas. Unfortunately, when I put our old guppies into the new tank, they didn't make it. So I asked Mrs. Kelly  to pick up a couple of goldfish for us. She was kind enough to do so. Thanks Mrs. Kelly! The first morning I walked into the classroom, I nervously checked to make sure that all was well. And fortunately, our two little goldfish were doing great. I decided to put on the new aquarium light and then started to prepare the classroom for the arrival of the boys and girls. When I looked over, this is what I saw~~

Have you ever seen such a cute sight? However, it made me wonder what was wrong. I thought that maybe they were afraid of the light. So, I shut the light off and sure enough they began to swim around again. Goldfish....afraid of the light.......I guess so!
This was just too cute not to share. Have a great day!

Fiction and Non-Fiction

We just finished up our unit on fiction and non-fiction.
We learned about the differences between these two genres.
We learned:
fiction books are imaginary stories while non-fiction books are true and factual.
fiction books have a beginning, middle, and end and must be read in order, while non-fiction books can be read out of order.
fiction books often have illustrations and drawings while non-fiction books often have diagrams and real pictures.
And ........we learned how to recognize the differences by looking at the cover of a book.
What do you notice?

Weight

                                                                  Weight Unit 10
Objective: To use non-standard objects to find the weight of things and to
compare weight using a non-standard object as a unit of measurement

The boys and girls had to weigh 3 different items using craft sticks

and pattern block hexagons.

We worked in our color groups to do our weighing...

 Object of the lesson:
